History of Cars in Newport
Newport has a tremendous history with the automobile, as the guilded age elite brought their fancy cars from the city to their vacation homes in Newport. In addition, Willie K Vanderbilt started a racing circuit in Portsmouth, where the Polo grounds are now located. The upper class from around the world would come and race on the open track, and it was the first sanctioned auto race in the US. Newport now has two wonderful museums, the Audrain Auto Museum on Bellevue Ave in Newport, and the Newport Auto Museum in Portsmouth.
