Automobiles in Rhode Island

Rhode Island has had a love affair with the automobile since the early days

The first automobile race that was held on a track in North America was held in Rhode Island at Narragansett Park and the first sanctioned, oval track race was in Middletown. It was started by Willie K. Vanderbilt II, of the Newport Vanderbilt family.

If you look at the auto dealerships in Rhode Island, many of them are still family owned and operated, and some can trace their heritage back nearly a hundred years to the early nineteen hundreds.  Currently there are franchised new car dealerships in Cranston, East Greenwich, East Providence, Johnston, Lincoln, Middletown, Narragansett, North Kingstown, North Smithfield, Pawtucket, Smithfield, South Kingstown, Tiverton, Warwick, West Warwick, and Westerly.

And just over the border in nearby Massachusetts, there are dealers in Attleboro, South Attleboro, Somerset, Swansea and Fall River.
